Steering is very tight due to poorly made u joint on the intermediate steering shaft. was quoted $460 by toyota to replace. i feel like this safety issue should be rectified free of charge through a tsb or recall

The STEERING
2009 Toyota Tacoma

Had just entered my driveway and tacoma cabin suddenly filled with heavy smoke and smell of something burning. stopped vehicle, set brake and got away from it after opening both doors. short time later opened hood to try and determine what had gone wrong expecting s radiator hose leak. after examining fluids, only the power steering tank was empty and passenger side of engine smelled like cabin did. had tacoma towed to dealer to determine what was wrong. their mechanic found massive corrosion of the power steering rack and lines were split/rotten blowing power steering fluid onto manifold and lower steering shaft freeing up. they had to replace power steering rack, lines, outter tie rods and steering shaft. then did an alignment. btw this tacoma had a frame replacement about a year ago. i firmly believe power steering rack could have been stressed during that time. also they should have detected the corrosion problem then. the mechanic and service advisor showed me what was left left of psr...severe corrosion had left pieces of it flaking off. i'm not having much success getting toyota to cover parts $$$ replacement and i am a 4 time ...

Power steering pump having issues i can fill it up to the full line and it will go down to half empty everytime i've done it therefore steering is very tight and difficult, the truck bed has huge holes rusted/corrosion completely through it on both sides, the spare tire mechanism is rusted so badly it doesn't work and half of it is missing due to rust/corrosion an has fallen off, and the frame broke completely in half on the driver side of the truck while i was driving it an caused the drive shaft to hang on the ground and it knocked a hole in the gas tank before i could get the truck stopped, also the suspension on the rear of the truck is not attached to the frame on the top under the bed just attached to the frame on the bottom.

Was driving down the road and the frame broke completely in half on the drivers side an caused the drive shaft to fall out and when it did it bounced up and knocked a hole in the gas tank causing me to wreck.and the bed of the truck has huge holes rusted through them.

This truck has 12 years and 62,000 miles on it. i was making a u-turn last week, and when i finished the turn i heard the noise of something breaking. then a clanking noise of metal on metal started to sound from under the steering column while turning the wheel and running over bumps. i also noticed excessive play on the turn of the steering wheel and vibration when driving above 50mph. i am a licensed auto tech and between the noise and the play determined that the truck was not safe to drive. i proceeded to diagnose the problem and found out that the mid steering shaft was worn out. the part connects the lower section of the steering column thru the firewall in the engine compartment to reach the rack and pinion assembly. the failed part is composed of two small shafts joined together by a rubber disk that acts as a damper. the shafts have a small metal base and in the section of the steering column it has a small u-joint. the small bases connect in two places at right angles to the rubber disk but the lower small shaft goes thru the ...

Stiff steering while stationary. difficult turning while moving after not using the vehicle for a time. this occurred after leaving the vehicle for 6 months or so at the dealer for a recall in 2012 or so. when i got the vehicle back it was ok but i don't know what they did to it. this problem just reoccurred last week after i did not use the vehicle for a while.

2007 Toyota Tacoma

The intermediate steering shaft u joint rusts and causes the steering to stiffen unexpectedly. i know there are technical service bulletins put out by toyota, it is disappointing that automobile company's are not held accountable by the nhtsa, since this is a safety issue.

Vehicle surges when steering wheel is turned, also is hesitant to shift gears on highway. frustrating as it is difficult to drive efficiently when your car does not shift as expected. tiring to drive in this way.

The STEERING
2008 Toyota Tacoma

The intermediate steering shaft u joint seizes up or is very hard to turn and will not let the steering return to straight position. u joint is not covered and exposed to elements therefore letting it rust and corrode. other toyota vehicles have been recalled for this same problem but not the tacoma.

The STEERING
2012 Toyota Tacoma

Wheel vibrates and shudders in motion, steering wheel becomes stiff, difficult to turn while highway driving.(see zh@ toyota support program). per bobby rahal, lewistown pa, universal shaft affected, corrosion noted. contacted toyota, recalls on same reported issues only covered on tacoma's from 2005-2011; they will not cover the recalled shaft assembly, universal joint and hanger for 2012 as it has not been recalled as of yet. they would rather have lawsuit apparently for faulty safety issues
